According to IISD's report, the "Joint Seminar on successful cases of technology transfer in Asian Countries" focussed on biomass technology, including case-study presentations on biofuel power for tea leaf drying in Indonesia, biomass gasification and power generation projects in China and Indonesia, applications of environmentally-friendly technologies for natural rubber processing in India, carbonising gasification for biomass/waste in Japan and rice husk power in Thailand.

Li Haibin, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, presented a paper on biomass gasification in China. He compared three biomass power generation technologies: direct combustion, co-firing and gasification, noting that gasification technology is feasible in China for plant under 10MW. Direct combustion and co-firing are more suitable for plant capacities over 10MW, he said. Li promoted the application of Japanese carbonising gasification technologies; and also presented the difficulties associated with pricing electricity generated from rice husk power plants.
